ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONCLUSION
The RETHINK Folk Music project transformed a number of European music school students into local folk music ambassadors. RETHINK Folk Music was part of the European Capital of Culture, Aarhus 2017, and was a collaboration between museums and music schools in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Latvia and Poland. Furthermore, the project also included masterclasses with mentors from Finland, Slovenia and Palestine to broaden and nuance the subject of folk music traditions. The project was based on the idea, that knowing about your own culture helps you to understand and appreciate foreign cultures. The students involved in the project successfully got together at our four big youth exchanges. They worked together on a number of new musical arrangements of their brought local folk music melodies, and presented their work in a number of concerts in our partner cities.
The four biggest gatherings happened in Silkeborg (DK), Umeå (SV), Aarhus (DK) and at Himmelbjerget (DK) over the course of 18 months in 2016 and 2017. The main objective was to open the eyes of young people to their own cultural heritage, and to use the historical folk music material in new contemporary frameworks. Through this the students have gained a number of new musical, social and linguistic competences, as well as a new European network of students, teachers, colleges, coordinators and friends. In this way, the RETHINK Folk Music project used cultural qualities inherent in folk music traditions (playing, dancing, local history and storytelling) to reach the objectives of the Erasmus+-programme; lifelong learning, multi-linguism, understanding and nurturing of cultural differences, social equality and active citizenship.
