We want to make room for traditions as well as rethinking
RETHINK Folk Music is a project from Denmark which aims to transform music school students into local music archaeologists. RETHINK Folk Music is funded by the European Capital of Culture-Foundation Aarhus 2017, and is a collaboration between museums and music schools in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Latvia, Poland and France.
Over the last three years, youngsters have performed, shared and rearranged a great number of local folk tunes from their own local areas. Through various workshops, festivals and concerts we have created a European platform, where the youngsters can find differences and similarities in other local cultures. These interactions have built networks between music schools, museums and musicians, who now have a deeper understanding of the local cultures presented and also their very own local historical music culture.
On top of a folk music festival at Himmelbjerget Denmark, the RETHINK Folk Music project has arranged a large number of workshops and concerts, where local audiences have been presented local tunes they might have never heard of before. Based in playing and dancing traditional melodies and dances, this is a great example of how looking outward towards Europe can tell us a lot about our own local heritage, form new deep friendships and understand ourselves as a part of something bigger.
